iPod Music Shuffle

H/T to my friend, Chris T.

Now that I have an iPod, I can actually answer this meme!

Once you've been tagged...

  1. Turn on your iPod / mp3 player
  2. Go to SHUFFLE songs mode
  3. Write down the first 15 songs that come up -- title and artist. NO editing or cheating, please.
  4. Share either your favorite line from the song, or a memory it brings to you, or a random observeration
  5. Choose 20 (or so) people to be tagged. Don't forget to circle back and tag the person who tagged you.

Here are my fifteen. I don't like tagging people, so if you've read this meme, consider yourself tagged.

  1. Buxtehude: Præludium in F Major (BuxWV 157)—David Durkop, organ
  2. Beethoven: An die ferne Geliebte (Op. 98:III)—Mattias Görne, baritone; Alfred Brendel, piano

16 August - Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost - Proper 15

*hangs head in shame*

I have no excuse. This list is quite late.

I only played one service last Sunday.

St. Joseph's Episcopal Church where I played the usual 10:30 am service. As usual, the numbers are out of The Hymnal 1982.

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost: Holy Eucharist Rite II
Prelude: Adagio from Voluntary I in A Major (Op. 7, No. 1; J. Stanley)
Processional Hymn: 432, O praise ye the Lord! (LAUDATE DOMINUM)
Trisagion: S-100, New Plainsong (Hurd)
Psalm: Ps 111 (Simplified Anglican Chant)
Sequence Hymn: 488, Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart (SLANE)
Offertory Hymn: 420, When in our music, God is glorified (ENGELBERG)
Sanctus: S-130, Deutsche Messe (Schubert/Proulx))
Lord's Prayer: chanted (S-119 in Hymnal 1982)
Fraction Anthem: S-169, My flesh is food indeed (Urwin)
Communion Hymn: 328, Draw nigh and take the Body of the Lord (SONG 46)
Recessional Hymn: 594, God of grace and God of glory (CWM RHONDDA)
Postlude: Allegro from Voluntary I in A Major (Op. 7, No. 1; Stanley)

I had a couple of oopsies in this service. First of all, I only did half the Psalm. I wasn't even aware that I cut the Psalm short until several people pointed it out to me at the end of service.

Mistake number two: I played the Closing Hymn way too fast. I noticed the congregation was lagging behind me, but I thought if I slowed it down, it will drag. Then afterward, people told me they thought I played it too fast. So I checked it with a metronome. Wouldn't you know it, they were right?

Oh well.

Tomorrow, I have three services to play and one Mass to cantor. I start by cantoring the 7:45 am Mass at Immaculate Conception. Then I play my usual 10:30 am service at St. Joseph's, followed by my last 4:00 pm service at Carol Woods for the summer, then I dash off immediately to Chapel of the Cross, where I play the 5:15 pm service. (Thanks, Brian, for switching with me at the last minute!)

Paul Manz, take 2

Again, H/T to Scott Knitter from the Anglican Music listserv.

This just posted on ELCA-L and reposted here without permission:

Further news from Bp. Hanson: He had overstated the gravity of the situation. Paul has been diagnosed with colin cancer and has moved to a nursing home, but was playing with his grandchildren yesterday. This is good to hear.

Still, prayers for his health and healing with respect to his cancer are no doubt appreciated.

Paul Manz

H/T to Scott Knitter from the Anglican Music listserv.

Please pray for organist, choirmaster, composer Paul Manz, who is reported to be "gravely ill," according to a post on ELCA-L. His family has asked for prayers, including those of members of the Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA, currently in session in Minneapolis.

Lord, have mercy.

James Dargan, baritone and violin

Yes, I came back for more. (Smooches to James! :) )

My friend, James Dargan, gave a violin and voice recital last Tuesday, August 11. It was a lovely evening of beautiful music amongst friends. It took place at Corasdaile Village, and the attendance was quite phenomenal. Those people pretty much watched James grow into a poised young man, so I'm sure it was a special treat to hear him play and sing.

Accompanined by J. Samuel Hammond on piano, James presented works by Bach, Fauré, Bellini, Tosti, Schubert, Butterworth, Finzi, Rasbach, Danzing, Rogers and Hammerstein, and Lerner and Loewe.

With that, the program.

  • Sonatina in D Major for Violin and Piano, Op. 317, No. 1

    Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

  • Rêve d'amour

    Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)

    F.P. Tosti (1846-1916)

  • L'ultima canzone

    Tosti

  • Gefrorne Tränen

    Schubert

  • An die Musik

    Schubert

  • Betrachte, meine Seel (from St. John's Passion; BWV 245)

9 August - Tenth Sunday after Pentecost - Proper 14

I have two lists to share with you today.

St. Joseph's Episcopal Church where I played the usual 10:30 am service. As usual, the numbers are out of The Hymnal 1982.

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost: Holy Eucharist Rite II
Prelude: Improvisation on Song 4; Prelude in d minor (attr. Bach); Improvisation on Lauda Anima (because I mis-estimated the time required for my other two pieces, and I had three minutes to kill...)
Processional Hymn: 410, Jesus, lover of my soul (LAUDA ANIMA)
Trisagion: S-100, New Plainsong (Hurd)
Psalm: Ps 130 (Simplified Anglican Chant)
Sequence Hymn: 577, God is love, and where true love is (UBI CARITAS (Murray))
Offertory Hymn: 341, For the bread which you have broken (OMNI DIE)
Sanctus: S-130, Deutsche Messe (Schubert/Proulx))
Lord's Prayer: chanted (S-119 in Hymnal 1982)
Fraction Anthem: S-169, My flesh is food indeed (Urwin)
Communion Hymn: 335, I am the bread of life (BREAD OF LIFE)
Recessional Hymn: 346, Completed, Lord, the Holy Mysteries (SONG 4)
Postlude: Fugue in d minor (attr. J.S. Bach)

Sigh. So my choice for Recessional may not have been the most singable. Oh well.

I played the 4:00 pm service for Carol Woods, which is organised by Chapel of the Cross. During the summer, the music list would generally reflect what was played at the 8:00 am Rite I Eucharist.

The music list:

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost: Holy Eucharist Rite I
Prelude: Adagio from Voluntary in A major (Op. 7, No. 1; J. Stanley)
Processional Hymn: 7, Christ whose glory fills the skies (RATISBON)
Psalm: Psalm 130 (recited)
Offertory Hymn: 321, My God, thy table now is spread (ROCKINGHAM)
Comm: Allegro from Voluntary in A major (Op. 7, No. 1; Stanley)
Recessional Hymn: 411, O bless the Lord, my soul (ST. THOMAS (Williams))
Postlude: Improvisation on St. Thomas

The next Carol Woods service will be on August 23. It will be the last Carol Woods service I play as the Duke Episcopal Center will start their services on August 30.

8 August - Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I was supposed to have played the Vigil Mass at Immaculate Conception last Saturday. As I was practising a piece on the organ, Brian, the DM, turned up. I was rather surprised, but he explained that at the last minute, he was able to play that Mass after all. He asked me to play the Communion piece so he could direct the choir, plus hear it out in the sanctuary, so I agreed. It was a pretty easy read anyway.

Here is the music, including Brian's prelude and postlude pieces. Any numbers you see come out of GIA's Gather Comprehensive 1994 (green cover), unless otherwise specified.

Saturday 5:30 pm Vigil Mass: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Prelude: Adoro Te Devote (G. Near, from St. Augustine's Organbook)
Hymn in Procession: 547, Sing of the Lord's Goodness (E. Sands)
Gloria: Joyful Gloria (K. Keil)
Psalm: 47, Psalm 34 (M. Haugen)
Gospel Acclamation: 198, Mass of Remembrance (M. Haugen)
Offertory: Rain Down (T. Kendzia)
Sanctus, Mem. Accl., Amen: 297, 298, 299, St. Louis Jesuits Mass (Dufford/Schutte)
Agnus Dei: 314, Holy Cross Mass (D.C. Isele)
Communion: The Hand of the Lord Feeds Us (S.R. Janco)
Recessional Hymn: 558, Lift Up Your Hearts (R. O'Connor)
Postlude: Toccata in F Major (D. Buxtehude)

To be honest, I was glad Brian turned up. I really do not play most of this type of music well at all. So I happily joined the singers in the choir area.

Mass of Remembrance for Cory Aquino

Goodness. I am always running late with my posts!

Last Saturday, the Filipino community in the Triangle Area (North Carolina) celebrated a Mass of Remembrance in honour of the late Philippine President Corazon Aquino.

This Mass took place at Holy Infant Catholic Church. Many thanks to Fr. Joe Brennan, OSFS, and the people of Holy Infant for opening their space to us.

Here is the music we sung during this Mass. Yes, my Liturgical Snob friends will tell me that some of what was chosen was not appropriate for Mass, but as one of my non-Filipino friends who attended the Mass told me, the people sang all the Tagalog music very well. (The English music was also sung very well.) Any numbers you see come from Breaking Bread 2009.

Many thanks to Charles C., Brian E., and Alan P. for their assistance in planning the music and liturgy.

Mass of Remembrance for Corazon C. Aquino
Processional: Pag-aalaala (M.V. Francisco; no relation to me)
Psalm: 481, Psalm 23 (M. Haugen)

Recessional Hymn: 522, Glorious things of thee are spoken (AUSTRIA)
Postlude: Fugue in C Major (attr. Bach)

Wow, amazing.

I'm typing up a service leaflet for the Memorial Mass for Cory Aquino, and I have lots of space to put some lyrics in for the Tagalog music we'll sing during and after the Mass.

This is the coolest thing. On Microsoft Word, I was able to change the language to "Filipino", and it automagically checked my spelling. In Tagalog. Yay! :) It was so nice to not see the red squiggly lines underneath almost every single word, or to have Word change words like "naman" to "naming", etc.

Squeee! :)

Don't mind me. I'm just a little silly from lack of sleep.

RIP, Cory Aquino (1933-2009)

Former President Cory Aquino passed away after a valiant battle against colon cancer. The world lost an icon to democracy, and the Philippines lost a role model and a beloved figure in her history.

GMANews.tv had interviewed her last year September in one of her last full-length interviews. You should have a look at it. She spoke in both English and Tagalog in the interview. There is also a nice "behind the scenes" section below the embedded video by those who had the chance to speak with her then. Click the photo below to access the page.

Her family has a website where you can leave your notes of condolences. If you click on the yellow ribbon, you will be taken to that page.

Lastly—the Filipino community in the Triangle (NC) area are planning a Mass of Remembrance for Tita Cory for next Saturday, August 8. The time and place are being negotiated, but we are hoping it will be at Immaculate Conception Church in the early afternoon. Watch this space as details become available.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Amen.
