Compline at Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill, NC—2.27.2011

Compline at Chapel of the Cross.

We've been using the Order for Compline, as set by David Hurd.

Here are our little additions:

Call to Remembrance (Farrant)
Psalms 31 and 134 (chanted to Tone 8)
Hymn: Christ, mighty Saviour (CHRISTE, LUX MUNDI, plainsong Mode 7)
Lord's Prayer (Robert Stone)
Nunc Dimittis from Short Service (O. Gibbons)
Ave Regina Cælorum (Marian antiphon right after the Dismissal)
Ave Maria (Cornelius Verdonck)
Organ improvisation by the abfab Van Quinn

We were very proud of Daniel Ripperton, who finally heeded our suggestions to chant a chapter. He is 18 years old and has sung with Van's Junior Choir until he aged out; he's been singing with the Compline choir since he was 15 or so. And oh, has he blossomed! Well done, Daniel! Here's to hoping you'll volunteer to chant the chapter more often!

Van is seeking suggestions for the post-Compline organ improvisations. Feel free to send him your suggestions via the comm box below (or if you're reading this in Facebook, leave a comment). Even better, if you're Facebook friends with Van, either PM him or write on his wall your suggestions. :)

27 February - Eighth Sunday After Epiphany

It is so hard to believe that our long post-Epiphany season is on the verge of coming to an end. It seemed nine Sundays after Epiphany was a long time... and yet here we are at the eighth Sunday after. Where did all that time go? I'm already looking ahead to Holy Week and Easter, musically.

Anyway, today's service was special because Bishop Curry was present to preside over the Celebration of a New Ministry. (Have a look at page 559 in the Book of Common Prayer for the liturgy we used today.) It was, indeed, a moving service.

Here is the music planned for today.

St. Joseph's Episcopal Church where I played the usual 10.30 am service. As usual, the numbers are out of The Hymnal 1982.

Eighth Sunday After Epiphany and Celebration of a New Ministry: Holy Eucharist Rite II
Prelude: Fantasia (J. Pachelbel); Improvisation on Lobe den Herren
Processional Hymn: 390, Praise the Lord! the Almighty, the King of creation (LOBE DEN HERREN)
Psalm: Psalm 131 (Simplified Anglican Chant)
Sequence Hymn: 711, Seek ye first the kingdom of God (SEEK YE FIRST)
Offertory Hymn: 408, Sing praise to God who reigns above (MIT FREUDEN ZART)
Sanctus: S-128 (W. Mathias)
Lord's Prayer: chanted (S-119 in Hymnal 1982)
Agnus Dei: S-165 (W. Mathias)
Communion Anthem: Vox ultima crucis: Tarry No Longer (William H. Harris)
Communion Chant: WLP 825, Bless the Lord, my soul (Taizé)
Recessional Hymn: 376, Joyful, joyful, we adore thee (HYMN TO JOY)
Postlude: Psalm XIX (B. Marcello)

Compline at Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill, NC—2.20.2011

I had fallen behind with posts, so this post has been back-dated to February 21, 2011.

Compline at Chapel of the Cross.

We've been using the Order for Compline, as set by David Hurd.

Here are our little additions:

O nata lux (Thomas Tallis)
Psalm 91 (chanted to Tone 8)
Hymn: To you before the close of day (TE LUCIS ANTE TERMINUM, Mode 8)
Lord's Prayer (Robert Stone)
Nunc Dimittis (fauxbourdon, H. Willan)
Ave Regina Cælorum (Marian antiphon right after the Dismissal)
Ave Maria (Tomas Luis de Victoria)
Organ improvisation by the abfab Van Quinn on Ave Regina Cælorum

We had reduced numbers, and I ended up being the only alto. The other sections had at least three singers. No pressure there, noooo, none at all...

I survived, and we received compliments on how wonderful we sounded.

13 February - Sixth Sunday After Epiphany

I've been falling waaaaay behind on posts lately. (I'm using this post as my excuse, and I'm sticking to it. :) )

I'll eventually catch up on my lists (and I won't fall further behind like I did last year). For now, here is the most recent music list at St. Joseph's. The Compline list will follow in a subsequent post.

St. Joseph's Episcopal Church where I played the usual 10.30 am service. As usual, the numbers are out of The Hymnal 1982.

Sixth Sunday After Epiphany: Holy Eucharist Rite II
Prelude: Improvisation on 'The Servant Song'
Processional Hymn: 616, Hail to the Lord's Anointed (ES FLOG EIN KLEINS WALDVÖGELEIN)
Gloria: S-278 (W. Mathias)
Psalm: Psalm 119:1–8 (Simplified Anglican Chant)
Sequence Hymn: 635, If thou but trust in God to guide thee (WER NUN DEN LIEBEN GOTT)
Offertory Hymn: Gather Comprehensive 669, Will you let me be your servant (The Servant Song)
Sanctus: S-128 (W. Mathias)
Lord's Prayer: chanted (S-119 in Hymnal 1982)
Agnus Dei: S-165 (W. Mathias)
Communion Anthem: If ye love me (T. Tallis)
Recessional Hymn: 594, God of grace and God of glory (CWM RHONDDA)
Postlude: Fuge in D (Wm. Selby)

Despite reduced forces, the choir sang the communion anthem unaccompanied. They did very well, and I'm very proud of them.

This coming Sunday will be St. Joseph's new vicar's first Sunday. Welcome, Rev. Karen Barfield! Many thanks to those who had stepped in during the interim period: Rev. Karen Barfield, Rev. Martin Caldwell, Rev. Berry Parsons, Rev. Travis Smith, Rev. Marion Thulberry, and most especially to Rev. Nils Chittenden. (If I forgot someone, my apologies.)

Procrastination. Lots and lots of procrastination.

Here's to hoping the procrastination trend will be minimised, and my poor, neglected blog will be filled with entries once again.

I won't count on it, though. First, I'll need to get internet access at home...

Compline at Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill, NC—2.6.2011

I had fallen behind with posts, so this post has been back-dated to February 7, 2011.

Compline at Chapel of the Cross.

We've been using the Order for Compline, as set by David Hurd.

Here are our little additions:

Lord, for Thy tender mercy's sake (Farrant)
Psalms 31 and 134 (chanted to Tone 8)
Hymn: To you before the close of day (TE LUCIS ANTE TERMINUM, Mode 8)
In manus tuas (Sheppard; sung in addition to "Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit ...)
Lord's Prayer (Robert Stone)
Nunc Dimittis from Short Service (O. Gibbons)
Ave Regina Cælorum (Marian antiphon right after the Dismissal)
Ave Maria (Tomas Luis de Victoria)
Choral Dorien (JA 67; Jehan Alain)

Lewis Moore had to step in and direct at the last minute. I also stepped in and played the organ voluntary at the end of the service. I got a lot of mileage out of the Alain piece. Since it was the 100th anniversary of his birth February 3, I decided to honour him by playing this piece. I didn't get much of a chance to register it on the Kleuker, but somehow, I managed. Don't ask me what I did... I just pulled stops and hoped for the best.
