For once, I'm posting this on time. :)
St. Joseph's Episcopal Church where I played the usual 10.30 am service. As usual, the numbers are out of The Hymnal 1982.
Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost: Holy Eucharist Rite II
Prelude: Composition on a Plainsong (John Dunstable); Gloria Tibi Trinitas: Two Parts on a Rownd Time (Thomas Tallis)
Processional Hymn: 546, Awake, my soul, stretch every nerve (SIROË)
Gloria: S-277, New Plainsong (Hurd)
Psalm: Psalm 119 (Simplified Anglican Chant)
Sequence Hymn: 704, O thou who camest from above (HEREFORD)
Offertory Hymn: 449, O love, how deep, how broad, how high (DEO GRACIAS)
Sanctus: S-125, Community Mass (Proulx)
Lord's Prayer: chanted (S-119 in Hymnal 1982)
Fraction Anthem: S-167, The disciples knew the Lord Jesus (M. Martens; Mode 6)
Communion Anthem: Ubi caritas et amor (arr. Alan Bullard)
Recessional Hymn: 411, O bless the Lord, my soul (ST. THOMAS (Williams))
Postlude: Agincourt Hymn (J. Dunstable)
I decided to shake things up a bit and use the alternate setting of "O love, how deep, how broad, how high" in today's service. The choir members admitted to me that they liked this setting better for that text. I'm not sure how the PIPs handled it though, but one person did tell me that he was thrown off by the different hymntune. I heard the congregation pretty clearly for the Sequence Hymn, which is new in tune and text for them. But it seems to me they handle anything written by S.S. Wesley pretty well.
Happy All Hallows' Eve to everyone!
Musings and such from an Organic Chemist who also occupies an organ bench when she's not at the lab bench.

No Compline today...
Thanks to the Halloween festivities on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, there will be no Compline tonight at Chapel of the Cross.
Instead, I'll be at the All Hallows' Eve service at Duke University Chapel tonight.
Here is the description from the Duke Chapel website:
Each year, Duke Chapel celebrates All Hallows Eve with the Choral Vespers Ensemble leading a candlelight worship service at 10:45 p.m. on October 31. All are invited, and Halloween costumes are welcome. For more information, call 919-681-9488. All Saints Day, the festival in the Church that recalls the faith and witness of the men and women who have carried and cherished the Christian faith throughout Church history. The service celebrates the Church's continuing communion with them, and memorializes the recently deceased. The early church followed the Jewish custom that a new day began at sundown; thus, feasts and festivals in the church were observed beginning on the night before. The night before All Saints (or All Hallows) became known as All Hallows Eve, or Halloween.
See you there! :)

Compline at Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill, NC—10.24.2010
Late. Again. Yes, it's being back-dated.
Compline at Chapel of the Cross.
We've been using the Order for Compline, as set by David Hurd.
Here are our little additions:
O Lord, the maker of all thing (Anon.; from the Sixteenth Century Anthem Book)
Psalms 4/31 (chanted to Tone 8)
Hymn: To you before the close of day (TE LUCIS ANTE TERMINUM, Mode 8)
Lord's Prayer (Robert Stone)
Nunc Dimittis (fauxbourdon, H. Willan)
Salve Regina (Marian antiphon right after the Dismissal)
Ave Maria (Cornelius Verdonck)
Organ improvisation by the abfab Van Quinn on Vaughn-Williams' "O How Amiable"
We haven't done the Verdonck in ages. It was nice to pull that one out again.
Van wasn't feeling very well, so he asked a few of us to share the cantoring duties, including: Travis Kephart, Danny Kumar, Charlotte Runde, Ali Carnes, me (Lyn Francisco), and Johnny Reis. We received plenty of positive feedback about sharing the cantoring duties. It was a nice change.
Van is seeking suggestions for the post-Compline organ improvisations. Feel free to send him your suggestions via the comm box below (or if you're reading this in Facebook, leave a comment). Even better, if you're Facebook friends with Van, either PM him or write on his wall your suggestions. :)

10 October - Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost - Proper 23
Sigh. Late again. Backdating. Again.
Better late than never, right?
St. Joseph's Episcopal Church where I played the usual 10.30 am service. As usual, the numbers are out of The Hymnal 1982.
Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost: Holy Eucharist Rite II
Prelude: Two settings of Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr (F. W. Zachau; A. N. Vetter)
Processional Hymn: 375, Give praise and glory unto God (DU LEBENSBROT HERR JESU CHRIST)
Gloria: S-277, New Plainsong (Hurd)
Psalm: Psalm 66 (Simplified Anglican Chant)
Sequence Hymn: 628, Help us, O Lord, to learn (ST. ETHELWALD)
Offertory Hymn: 390, Praise the Lord! the Almighty, the King of creation (LOBE DEN HERREN)
Sanctus: S-125, Community Mass (Proulx)
Lord's Prayer: chanted (S-119 in Hymnal 1982)
Fraction Anthem: S-167, The disciples knew the Lord Jesus (M. Martens; Mode 6)
Communion Anthem: Now God be praised in heav’n above (M. Vulpius)
Recessional Hymn: 397, Now thank we all our God (NUN DANKET ALLE GOTT)
Postlude: Nun danket alle Gott (G.F. Kaufmann)
Since UNC was on Fall Break, and the usual pianist went home for the break, I played the 4:00 pm service for Carol Woods, which is organised by Chapel of the Cross. The music list would generally resemble the 8.00 am summer morning Rite I services.
The music list:
Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost: Holy Eucharist Rite I
Prelude: Improvisation on Regent Square
Processional Hymn: 375, Give praise and glory unto God (DU LEBENSBROT HERR JESU CHRIST)
Psalm: Psalm 111 (recited)
Offertory Hymn: 390, Praise the Lord! the Almighty, the King of creation (LOBE DEN HERREN)
Communion Voluntary: Two settings of Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr (F. W. Zachau; J. G. Walther)
Recessional Hymn: 397, Now thank we all our God (NUN DANKET ALLE GOTT)
Postlude: Nun danket alle Gott (G.F. Kaufmann)
I managed to convince the presider du jour (David Frazelle) to use the hymns listed above. Notice the similarity to those I chose for St. Joe's? ;) Even though Chapel of the Cross uses a different set of readings (except for the Gospel reading, which is the same), I thought the above hymns still fit, and I'm glad David agrees with me. It helps that the above hymns were also very familiar to the people as well.
Speaking of which... the people who go to this service are very appreciative of my efforts. So of course, I'll be very happy to step in and play a service whenever they need me.

Late. Again. Yes, it's being back-dated.
Compline at Chapel of the Cross.
We've been using the Order for Compline, as set by David Hurd.
Here are our little additions:
Domine fac mecum (Thomas Morley)
Psalms 4/134 (chanted to Tone 8)
Hymn: To you before the close of day (TE LUCIS ANTE TERMINUM, Mode 8)
In manus tuas (Sheppard; sung in addition to "Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit ...)
Lord's Prayer (Robert Stone)
Nunc Dimittis (fauxbourdon, H. Willan)
Salve Regina (Marian antiphon right after the Dismissal)
Ave Maria (Tomas Luis de Victoria)
Organ improvisation by the abfab Van Quinn
This was the first week we sang the Stone "Lord's Prayer". It's a lovely piece. I linked the YouTube video above so you could have an idea how it sounds like. I agree with the commentator however: that group had taken the tempo too fast, and as a result, it didn't sound all that prayerful. I'd like to think that we made it sound more... well, reflective, really, than that.
